Shmira-NYPD Joint Operation Leads to Arrest for String of Robberies

December 26, 2012 Filed under Shmira News

A Crown Heights resident, who had recently been robbed of his cell phone at gunpoint by 2 male blacks, contacted Shmira for help in retrieving his stolen cell phone. A Shmira coordinator called the stolen phone and made contact with the suspect offering to purchase the phone. The suspect was interested and after some negotiations, the suspect agreed on $200 for the phone. A meet was set up for the exchange but not before the suspect gave a stern warning that police better not be called and reminding the Shmira coordinator that the phone was stolen at gunpoint.

On Monday, December 24, 2012 at approximately 2:00pm; after changing his mind about the location for the meet more than three times the suspect finally agreed to meet on the corner of Carroll Street and Schenectady Avenue. Shmira immediately arranged to have plain clothed police officers stake out that corner. When the perpetrators showed up for the sale they were identified by the victim who was waiting in a nearby car.

The suspects were arrested for the robbery and Police found a pellet gun and the stolen cell phone on one of the suspects. The suspects were transported to the 77th Pct Detective Squad since the crime had occurred within their confines. The victim was able to positively identify both of the suspects in a lineup. After further questioning in the station house, the suspects confessed to over 15 gun-point robberies.

A Special thanks to Lieutenants Weiss and Veromin for working with us on this sting in a very professional manner for the good of the community.
