IPHONE SNATCHER IN CROWN HEIGHTS

Friday, April 05, 2013 approximately 1:45PM: A bystander noticed a teenager snatch an iphone from an unsuspecting young woman who was standing on the corner of Troy Avenue and Carroll Street while texting. He immediately called the Crown Heights Shmira hotline. Shmira members responded and canvassed the area with the victim with no luck. In the meantime, 911 was called and Police officers arrived and checked the cameras from the grocery store on the corner but were only able to get a partial description of the perpetrator. Meanwhile, Shmira members were tracking the phone via the iphone GPS tracking, but it was ‘offline’.

Shoplifter at Kol-Tuv Again

Sunday, March 17, 2013 approximately 6:53PM Crown Heights Shmira helped detain two shoplifters who attempted to make off with six packs of dove soap valued at approximately $50.00 until Police arrived and placed them under arrest.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at approximately 12:10pm: A Crown Heights Shmira member was on Montgomery Street between New York and Nostrand Avenues, when he heard someone screaming. Two cars had been broken into, and the perpetrator was getting away with the stolen goods. Read more
SHMIRA SELF-DEFENCE SEMINAR A SUCCESS

On Sunday, January 6, a 2-hour seminar about street-wise self-defense was held in the heart of Crown Heights, organized by the Crown Heights Shmira patrol.
The seminar, attended by men and boys ages 13 and up, educated the community on the basics of how to defend oneself against common street attacks.

SERIAL TIRE SLASHER APPREHENDED

Thursday, January 10, 2013 at approximately 2:00PM: A Crown Heights resident pulled his van over on Eastern Parkway between Kingston and Albany Avenues. He was approached by a male black wielding a long knife. The perpetrator began to scream at the resident threatening to puncture his tires unless he moved immediately. The resident immediately pulled out his phone, and began recording. After being clearly informed that he was being filmed, the perpetrator proceeded to walk over to the van and stab the tire repeatedly until it began to deflate. Read more
Shmira-NYPD Joint Operation Leads to Arrest for String of Robberies

A Crown Heights resident, who had recently been robbed of his cell phone at gunpoint by 2 male blacks, contacted Shmira for help in retrieving his stolen cell phone. A Shmira coordinator called the stolen phone and made contact with the suspect offering to purchase the phone. The suspect was interested and after some negotiations, the suspect agreed on $200 for the phone. A meet was set up for the exchange but not before the suspect gave a stern warning that police better not be called and reminding the Shmira coordinator that the phone was stolen at gunpoint.

Shmira’s partnership with the Police Department keeps bearing fruits!

The quick thinking action of a technology savvy Shmira volunteer brought a swift end to the careers of a pair of cell phone robbers. The pair had just robbed a Crown Heights resident of his I-phone and made a quick get away on their bikes. Eyewitnesses immediately called Shmira and a Shmira volunteer responded within minutes. The Shmira members & NYPD tracked the I-phone to Atlantic Ave and Marconi Place. Additional unites were dispatched to that location and were given a description of the bike riding I-phone thieves.

Serial Burglar Apprehended

Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at approximately 11:00PM a patrolling Shmira/COP member noticed a suspicious male black entering a house on Kingston Avenue between Montgomery and Crown Streets. The Shmira member immediately called it in to the central hotline. While backup was on the way the suspect exited the house carrying a box and a bag that he didn’t have with him upon entering the house. The Shmira member attempted to approach and ask the suspect what he was doing in the house when the suspect immediately began to flee. A chase ensued, but ended quickly with the help of some passersby near mikvah meir.
