SHMIRA RETRIEVES STOLEN SCOOTER

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Friday at approximately 5:20pm a young boy entered the Bargain Center located on Kingston Avenue between Crown and Carroll Street leaving his scooter unattended outside the store. Moments later, upon exiting the store the scooter had disappeared.

The boy called Shmira. Shmira members arrived on scene, called 911, got a description of the scooter and immediately spread out canvassing the area in search for the scooter. When Police arrived they stated that the boy would have to come down to the precinct later on with his parents to make the report since they were unable to make the report in the absence of his parents. Meanwhile multiple Shmira volunteers were diligently searching all the streets and alleyways in the neighborhood. After an hour and a half of searching one of the volunteers found the scooter abandoned on Crown Street near the entrance to a house. The boy was called and his scooter was returned to him. (more…)

Shmira Advisory Report

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Today, Thursday May 22 at approximately 4:30pm a male black entered sweet expressions a candy store on the corner of Kingston Avenue and Union Street and attempted to steal the pushkas (charity boxes) from the counter. The cashier acted quickly and called the Police. The black man realized that the Police were approaching and left the pushkas inside the store. Since he did not leave the store with the goods he technically did not steal and consequently the Police were unable to make an arrest.

This is the same man who Shmira had caught and was arrested by the NYPD this past Tuesday, May 13th for stealing Pushkas from Empire Grill. Shmira is asking all storeowners and residents of Crown Height to be on the alert for this man (see photo below). This man is a repeat offender and we don’t know what else he is capable of.

REMEMBER:

If you are in a store and suspect someone of shoplifting keep in mind that he must leave the store with the merchandise before he can be arrested and charged for theft.

CROWN HEIGHTS MULTI-CULTURAL CO-OPERATION SAVES GIRL

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Early Friday morning, May 2nd, a girl was walking from the subway station and forced at knifepoint to enter an apartment building where she was taken to the top of the stairwell. She screamed for help as the perpetrator began to unfasten and strip her of her jeans.

The building, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, is home to a mixture of predominately Black residents, and a few Chassidic Jews. The screams were heard by a Chassidic man living on the top floor. Well aware that he would be intervening in a scenario outside of his own culture and therefore could be risking his own life, he took his phone in hand and ventured out to trace the screams. Announcing first “Are you in need of assistance?” Leonid Yavich frightened off the assailant and called 911. “At first I chased the criminal,” said Yavich. “I realized I could not catch him, so I went back and waited with the girl. She was hysterical. The police came quickly. A detective called me the next day to confirm the details. He was very emotional when he told me that I literally saved the girl.” Both the assailant and the victim were Black.

Yavich is a member of a Crown Heights patrol group known as Shmira. Shmira has worked together with the police to keep the Crown Heights neighborhood safe for decades. Their goal is security. They assist all segments of the multi-cultured Crown Heights community. “Despite my desire to help a person in distress, if not for my years of training and experience with Shmira, I would have hesitated to act in such a precarious situation in the middle of the night,” admits Yavich.

Jewish community leaders are wondering if the rescue of a black girl by a Shmira member will change the perspective of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes who has recently compared Shmira to Bloods and Crips - violent gangs that threatened area of Los Angeles in the 60’s and 70’s. “Here we have a clear case of a potential rapist operating at knife point and a Black victim who was saved because of Shmira.  We expect Mr. Hynes to give praise when praise is due and show support for Jews who protect the community. Shmira Patrol is an asset to Crown Heights’ entire multi-ethnic composition,” commented Rabbi Leibish Nash, senior Member of the Board of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council.

“While others may sit in their mono-ethnic neighborhoods and talk of love and unity – we in Crown Heights live side by side with our neighbors in our culturally diverse atmosphere. Our day to day life has long been cited as a model to the world as to how different peoples can co-exist harmoniously. Unfortunately we do have incidents - in a big city they can be expected - but we know from experience that even those rare and tragic incidents are manageable. Shmira has been an integral part of keeping the peace in their program of working together with the NYPD. This latest example this past Thursday that certainly saved one 17 year old Black girl from being raped at knifepoint will surprise no one who lives here.”

SECURITY INCIDENTS DISCUSSED AT OPEN MEETING IN CROWN HEIGHTS

Monday, May 19th, 2008

After Maariv on Sunday night, a meeting was called to bring together residents of Crown Heights who are concerned about the deteriorating security in the neighborhood. Assemblyman Dov Hinkind came to the meeting to hear first hand the concerns of the residents and to give his analysis and suggestions.

More than a hundred men crowded into the living room, dining room and hallway of the house on Carroll Street near NY Avenue where the meeting took place. In attendance were Chanina Sperlin, Liebish Nash, Eli Slavin and Levi Huebner.

The meeting went smoothly as residents took their turn in expressing their concerns and experiences.

Twice survivor of attacks on the World Trade Center, Avraham Kamman, told Hikind about the increasing lawlessness in segments of the black community, the support they get from the press and the potential for extreme danger if issues are not addressed properly and quickly.

Mendy Goldshmidt reported that he and his children had been victim to rock throwing on Shabbos. They located two officers who were new on the job and ill-trained. The officers totally nixed any chance of catching the perpetrators or even filing a report.

A Seewald brother also spoke up about an event that happened on Shabbos. It involved cross complaints and ended without filing a report. Huebner had come to the police station and verified for the meeting participants the difficulties in dealing with the police.

It became clear that the police are interested in having as few reports filed as possible because the number of reports reflects on their performance. The fewer reports the better they are doing their job. Dovid Shmukler told of two personal stories of police negligence. “They are fudging the numbers,” he said.

Hikind asked if all these stories have been documented. Yaakov Young said they can all be found on the internet and in addition to that, he is preparing a record of the incidents.

Further comments revealed that some residents feel they are under siege. Wives and children are afraid to leave the house. Participants want there to be action to improve the security in the neighborhood.

A dynamic speaker whose first name is Shimon spoke about the importance of having cameras on every corner. He also advocated hiring a private security company, “Everyone should pay fifty dollars and instead of being armed with walkie-talkies, Jeeps with visibly armed patrols would do the job,” said Shlomo. Kamman confirmed that this system works very well on Wall Street.

After hearing the first hand experiences, concerns and ideas, Dov Hikind got up to speak. The first thing he addressed was the exceptional hatred he has encountered when working with community problems in Crown Heights. He spoke specifically and he said it was for the record – not something that should be hidden. He told of his vigorous efforts to make peace with the competing Shmira and Shomrim patrol groups. He said publicly that the leaders of Shmira are willing to make incredible compromises for the sake of the community, but the Shomrim are not willing.

Hikind said that the serious lack of leadership in Crown Heights is a tragedy. He compared the Crown Heights situation to other Jewish communities in Brooklyn. “Crown Heights is isolated. You have a large Jewish community but you are surrounded and you are politically outnumbered,” he said. However he informed the meeting that he got a phone call from the Assemblyman for Crown Heights saying that he was concerned about the Jewish community.

Hikind said it is important to have a plan. First you have to document facts about incidents. The documentation is important and that it be facts, and not just stories, is important.

When there is an incident, it has to be reported and if it is not handled properly it has to be followed up. There has to be a demand for action and investigation ending in an answer for every case. A group of lawyers should be on hand for consultation. We need the police, we cannot manage without them, but we are responsible to make sure they do their job. It is not a simple thing.

Hikind pointed out that we always have to be careful what we say to the media because they are not our friends.

Hikind said he liked the idea of putting cameras to watch the streets. He said that in his districts all subway stations have multiple cameras. There is no reason why Jewish Crown Heights should not have cameras everywhere.

Hikind committed himself to moving forward towards getting the cameras and working further with Crown Heights residents. “I care,” he said. “There are times when you have to be tough. But there is no sense in being tough if you do not have a plan. You have to have a plan.”

At one point in his presentation Hikind said, “Look, Moshiach is not coming tomorrow.” With that, everyone in the dining room, living room and hallway responded all at once. The collective response was friendly not hostile. Since all hundred voices were being heard simultaneously, the actual words were not clear, but the message was clear: Moshiach can come this moment! We know it for a fact. That does not mean we are not moving forward B’Gashmius – living according to nature is a Mitzvah even when we know Moshiach’s arrival is immanent. We are ready for Moshiach Now!

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Sunday, May 18, 2008 at approximately 3:00pm a 15 year old Jewish boy, who suffers from Down syndrome was walking home from school when two African American teenagers approached him on Carroll Street between Troy and Schenectady Avenue and asked him for his money. When he replied that he had no money the perpetrators proceeded to move toward him in a threatening manner at which time the boy began running with the perpetrators close behind him giving chase. The Down syndrome boy running away from his attackers tripped and fell on the ground. Just as the two perpetrators were closing in upon the boy a passing motorist noticed the boy being chased from afar and immediately pulled over to help the boy. Upon his arrival the perpetrators got scared and ran away. The witness called Shmira and members responded within seconds. The Shmira members together with the witness took the boy into the vehicle where he would feel a bit safer and began questioning the boy for a description of the perpetrators.
