SHMIRA RETRIEVES YET ANOTHER BICYCLE

Thursday, June 26th – 9:45pm: Shmira received a call that a bicycle, which had been previously stolen, had just been spotted on the corner of Lefferts and Albany Avenue. Shmira members arrived immediately and were directed by the caller to Lefferts Park where an African America teen was riding the bicycle. The bicycle belonged to a girl that lived nearby. Only days earlier, the girl had locked up her bicycle inside Lefferts Park for a few minutes and when she returned the bicycle had disappeared. The Shmira members entered the park however were unable to identify the bicycle since there was more than one teen riding a bicycle in the park and due to the darkness of the night were unable to differentiate between the different bicycles. SHMIRA RETRIEVES STOLEN BICYCLE

Tuesday, June 24, 2008 – 11:50am: A Crown Heights resident living on Balfour Place between Lefferts Avenue and Empire Boulevard looked out of his window and noticed two African American males and one female throwing a bicycle over the fence surrounding the backyard of 485 Brooklyn Avenue and then riding off on the bicycle. Acting quickly, the resident called the Shmira hotline and also began filming with his camera. Shmira members responded and one member began reviewing the footage while the others began to canvass the area in search for the bicycle and perpetrators. Within a minute one of the members canvassing noticed a Bicycle, that matched the description sitting on the ramp outside of IS 61/MS 61, the Public School located on Empire Boulevard between New York and Nostrand Avenue. The member communicated his findings over the radio and another Shmira member picked up the witness and proceeded over to the Public School. Read more

ONCE AGAIN: SCOOTER STOLEN IN CROWN HEIGHTS

Monday, June 23, 2008, at approximately 5:50pm a mother was with her children who were playing in Bower Park, located on the corner of Kingston Avenue and Park Place, when a young African American approximately 10-12 years of age grabbed a scooter from one of the children. Shmira was called and 911 dispatched. Shmira members arrived on scene, got a description of the scooter, possible perpetrators and the direction of flight. The members on scene transmitted the information over the Shmira radio and advised the Woman to file a police report. Shmira members canvassed the area but were unfortunately unsuccessful in locating the stolen property.

The scooter, manufactured by RAZOR is red in color and has the name LAZAR written underneath it. If you see this scooter please contact Shmira and 911 immediately.

ROCKS THROWN AT BOYS PLAYING IN PARK

Wednesday, June 18, 2008 approximately 9:45am a group of young boys were playing baseball in Lefferts Park, located on Lefferts Avenue between Kingston and Albany Avenue, when suddenly a variety of objects came soaring down upon them from the roof of an adjacent building, 570 Lefferts Avenue. Upon glancing toward the roof one of the boys noticed an African American male standing there and throwing rocks and other objects over the edge. Crown Heights Shmira was called and responded. When the first member arrived he spotted the perpetrator standing on the roof peering over the edge. The Shmira member transmitted the situation over his radio and 911 was dispatched. Read more

CAR BURSTS INTO FLAMES, SHMIRA SAVES THE DAY.

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 approximately 6:35pm a Crown Heights Shmira member was on his way home from work when he caught a whiff of smoke. After a quick investigation, the Shmira member found the source in the back of 309 Crown Street between New York and Nostrand Avenue, where a car was emitting smoke. This car had been stolen and the thief had abandoned it in the backyard. It has been sitting there for over two years. The Shmira member acted quickly and requested over his Shmira radio for the dispatcher to call 911. Read more

GRAND LARCENY IN THE HEART OF CROWN HEIGHTS

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 approximately 12:25pm A Hasidic Jew from Georgia, who is in Crown Heights visiting family, parked his vehicle in front of 621 Crown Street Between Albany and Troy Avenue and went inside for under two minutes to drop something off, leaving his doors closed but unlocked. When he returned the side door of his vehicle was wide open and one of his bags containing his belongings valued at over $10.000.00 Dollars including; a laptop, four pairs of Tefillin (phylacteries), passport, checks and other valuable objects was missing. The Crown Heights Shmira was called and 911 and Shmira members were dispatched to the location.

Sunday June 15, 2008 at approximately 5:30pm a pair of young African American boys tried climbing over the gate in front of 770 Lefferts Avenue between Troy and Schenectady Avenue while throwing sticks and other objects at the Jewish boys playing under the building. Shmira was called. When the Shmira members arrived the African American boys had already dispersed and were walking down the block. One of the Shmira members approached the boys and asked them to please refrain from entering the building premises in the future. Read more

Sunday, June 15, 2008 at approximately 12:00 noon Shmira was called to the alleyway behind 1451 Carroll Street between Albany and Troy Avenue. The caller had just realized that their car had been broken into. As Shmira responded 911 was simultaneously dispatched. The Shmira member arrived on scene and found that the passenger side window had been shattered. After it was apparent that nothing had been stolen from inside the car the Shmira member remained to help the complainant file a Police report.

Friday, June 6, 2008, Mrs. Shlima Esther (Sandra) Blumenfield, a 62 year old woman, residing at 672 Empire Blvd, who lived in Crown Heights for many years, confirmed with her host that she would be joining them for their Shabbos meal. That was the last time anyone heard from her and she never showed up for the Shabbos meal. After Yom Tov, four days later a neighbor, concerned that she was missing called Hatzalah. Hatzalah responded, however they were unable to gain access to the apartment. Read more
