Refusing to Press Charges Results in Perps Walking

Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 3:35AM: An alert Crown Heights resident noticed  two suspicious males walking on Albany Avenue near Crown Street trying door handles of vehicles.

The witness immediately phoned the Shmira emergency hotline and informed the dispatcher of the suspicious activity he was observing. Shmira dispatched the already patrolling Shmira car and requested a few more units to follow the suspects.

It wasn’t long before the suspects found an unlocked SUV in front of 606 Empire Blvd and entered the vehicle. After ransacking the vehicle and finding nothing of value, they exited the vehicle and quickly began walking towards Albany Avenue. Shmira members followed the duo while 911 was called. A passing Police car was flagged down and the group was stopped. Police ran the vehicle license plate and notified the owner to come outside. When the owner arrived, a non-Jewish female, she searched her vehicle and found nothing missing and refused to press charges. Police had no choice but to release the two males with a stern warning.

The police sergeant praised Shmira for their great work and stated “I wish I had you guys in my neighborhood!”
